A 1080x1920 canvas matches the native resolution of most phones. If you upload a landscape or square image, TikTok pillarboxes it with empty space, which wastes the most valuable part of the feed and looks unfinished next to native vertical content.
TikTok videos and covers use a 9:16 vertical frame, which is 1080 x 1920 pixels at full resolution. Anything else is letterboxed or cropped by the app.
The cover uses the same 1080 x 1920 pixel canvas as the video itself. Design it at that size so the thumbnail in your profile grid is not cropped awkwardly.
Black bars appear when the image is not 9:16. Resizing to 1080 x 1920 pixels removes them and lets the image fill the screen edge to edge.
Keep important text in the middle of the frame. The username, caption and action buttons sit along the bottom and right edge and will cover anything placed there.
