Instagram supports ratios from 1.91:1 landscape through to 4:5 portrait. 4:5 is the tallest permitted, so it occupies the largest possible area in the feed. Go any taller and Instagram crops the top and bottom automatically.
For maximum space in the feed use 1080 x 1350 pixels, a 4:5 portrait. Square 1080 x 1080 also works well and is safer if the image will be reused elsewhere.
