Your avatar appears at wildly different sizes on Discord, from a tiny 20 pixel dot beside a message up to a large profile popout. Uploading a 512x512 square gives Discord enough resolution to render all of those cleanly from one file.
Discord recommends uploading a 512 x 512 pixel square. It is displayed at 128 x 128 in the profile popout and masked into a circle.
Blurry avatars come from uploading an image smaller than 128 pixels, or a non square image that Discord has stretched. Start from a 512 x 512 square.
Animated avatars require Discord Nitro. Without Nitro the GIF is shown as a single static frame, so make sure that frame looks right on its own.
Discord masks the square into a circle, so the corners are always hidden. Keep faces and text well inside the middle of the frame.
